Description
Elastin is an extracellular matrix protein encoded by the gene ELN, which is mapped to human chromosome 7q11.23. It is a major protein component of elastic fibers and is synthesized from the precursor protein called tropoelastin. Elastin is present in all vertebrates except for the primitive fish and is majorly composed of glycine, proline, and other hydrophobic residues. Elastin is an insoluble extracellular matrix protein and the core protein of elastic fibers that impart elasticity to skin. It is particularly abundant in elastic cartilage, blood-vessel walls, ligaments, and the heart.
Uses
Used in Cosmetics:
Elastin is used as a surface protective agent for alleviating the effects of dry skin, enhancing skin flexibility, improving skin feel, increasing and improving the tension of the skin, and influencing the formation of tropocollagen fibers when used in combination with soluble collagen. Preparations containing elastin and peptides derived from it are reported to promote wound healing. In such systems, elastin can absorb lipids from the skin, and when applied to scars, increase the structural glycoproteins and elastin available in the scar tissue. Elastin is often used in moisturizing products and those products for aging or mature skin.
Used in Research:
Elastin mouse lung has been used as an extracellular matrix (ECM) protein for coating of plates.
Elastin (hydrolyzed) is a modified form of elastin that has better solubility, making it more convenient for use in cosmetic formulations than regular elastin.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Protein responsible for the elasticity of many tissues. It is especially important in blood vessels, where it comprises about 50% of the dry tissue weight.
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 9007-58-3 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 9,0,0 and 7 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 5 and 8 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 9007-58:
(6*9)+(5*0)+(4*0)+(3*7)+(2*5)+(1*8)=93
93 % 10 = 3
So 9007-58-3 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
