9080-17-5 Usage

Description

Ammonium sulfide ((NH4)2(Sx)) is a ruby red liquid with a strong odor of ammonia, known for its corrosive properties towards eyes and skin. It is also corrosive when ingested, causing severe burns and corrosion throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Inhalation of its fumes should be avoided, as heating or diluting its solutions may release hydrogen sulfide and ammonia vapors. It exists only in solution and is prepared by dissolving hydrogen sulfide gas in a 28% ammonium hydroxide solution, followed by dissolving excess sulfur.

Uses

Used in Analytical Chemistry:
Ammonium sulfide ((NH4)2(Sx)) is used as an analytical chemistry reagent due to its unique chemical properties and reactivity with various compounds.
Used in Pest Control:
In the agricultural industry, ammonium sulfide ((NH4)2(Sx)) is used as an insect spray to control pests. Its corrosive nature makes it effective in eliminating insects that can damage crops and reduce yields.

Air & Water Reactions

Denser than water and dissolves in water with some precipitation of elemental sulfur.

Reactivity Profile

When heated or diluted, solutions may evolve hydrogen sulfide and ammonia vapors. Inorganic sulfides, such as AMMONIUM POLYSULFIDE, are generally basic and therefore incompatible with acids. Many of these compounds are reducing agents and therefore react vigorously with oxidizing agents, including inorganic oxoacids, organic peroxides and epoxides. Simple salts of sulfides (such as sodium, potassium, and ammonium sulfide) react vigorously with acids to release hydrogen sulfide gas. Aqueous ammonia and Hg react to form an explosive solid, likely a fulminate. (Thodos, G. Amer. Inst. Chen. Engrs. J., 1964, 10, 274.).

Safety Profile

Poison by ingestion. Moderately toxic by skin contact. See also AMMONIUM HYDROSULFIDE. When heated to decomposition it emits very toxic fumes of NOx, SOx, and H2S.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 9080-17-5 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 9,0,8 and 0 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 1 and 7 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 9080-17:
(6*9)+(5*0)+(4*8)+(3*0)+(2*1)+(1*7)=95
95 % 10 = 5
So 9080-17-5 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
