Identification and determination of isomeric 16-carbon (C//1//6) 2,5-dialkyloxolanes, formed during the autoxidation of n-hexadecane under reduced oxygen pressures, by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and capillary GC are described. A bonded phase fused silica capillary column and a 'reduced pressure' on-column injection technique have been utilized for the quantitative GC analysis. Nine chromatographic peaks have been identified and assigned to six pairs of geometric isomers of C//1//6 2,5-dialkyloxolanes based on relative retention times, stereochemistry of cis and trans isomers, and formation of characteristic five-membered ring oxonium ions formed by electron-impact fragmentation.
