Synthesis of Naturally Occuring 6-Oxygenated-2,2-dimethylchromenes

Two naturally occurring chromenes, viz. 6-methoxy-2,2-dimethylchrom-3-ene (Ia) and 6-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylchrom-3-ene (Ib) have been synthesised in high yield.Cyclodehydration of condensation products of 2-hydroxy-5-methoxyacetophenone and 2,5-dihydroxyacetophenone with acetone give excellent yields of the required 6-methoxy-(IVa) and 6-hydroxy-(IVb)-2,2-dimethylchroman-4-ones.IVa and IVb on reduction with LAH followed by dehydration on heating in benzene containing catalytic amount of p-toluenesulphonic acid furnish the corresponding chromenes (Ia and Ib).
