Radical-addition reactions are widely used in organic synthesis for production of various polyfunctional compounds. The authors established in this investigation that the important asymmetric esters of carbonic acids (dialkyl carbonates), which are used as solvents, intermediates for polymers, extractants and plasticizers, and also in fine organic synthesis can be obtained by the addition of the corresponding orthoformates to alkenes. The authors studied addition of ethyl orthoformate (I) to 1-hexene (II) and 1-octene (III) in the presence of tert-butyl peroxide (TBP) at 140 degree C.
