3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
The plating solution is an acidic liquid and contact with the skin may cause
burns. Serious damage may be caused to the eyes. Inhalation of mists and
fumes will irritate the respiratory tract. The immediate hazards arise from the
sulfuric acid content.
Note that if platinum-chloro complexes are formed, they will be highly allergenic,
causing a Type 1 sensitisation.

4. FIRST AID MEASURES
Over-exposure may produce the following symptoms -
First Aid
Inhalation - irritating to the eyes, nose, throat and respiratory tract, producing
coughing.
Ingestion - nausea and vomiting.
Eye contact - redness, irritation, blurred vision and pain.
Skin - redness and irritation with possible tissue damage.

remove from exposure and allow to rest in fresh air. Seek medical advice.

persist or tissue damage is evident, seek medical attention.Launder clothing
before re-use.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Although the material is not flammable, toxic fumes will be produced if involved in
a fire. The residue, ash or char left after a fire may have catalytic properties and
may promote the re-ignition of flammable materials and vapours. Wear self-
contained breathing apparatus and personal protective equipment. Use any

extinguisher suitable for the surrounding fire.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Wearing chemical resistant gloves and eye protection, spread lime (calcium
hydroxide) or sodium carbonate liberally over the spillage to neutralise the acid
and mop up cautiously with plenty of water. Wash the area thoroughly with water
afterwards.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Local exhaust extraction should be used and protective clothing, including gloves
Handling (JM)
and eye protection should be worn. Do not eat, drink, smoke or apply cosmetics
whilst handling.
Store in an air-tight container in a cool, dry place.

152005 2.00 EC Current 11.08.1999

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY (continued)
The acidic solution will corrode most metals, releasing hydrogen, an explosion
hazard. Users should note that prolonged exposure of concrete to aqueous
sulfate solutions will result in deterioration.

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
There is no specific toxicological data available.
Persons with a history of allergic diseases, such as asthma or hay-fever,
should not work with platinum salts. A history of cardiac or pulmonary disease
may also preclude work with platinum salts - medical opinion should be sought.
Any workers experiencing untoward effects or symptoms should be removed
from exposure and medically examined for platinum sensitivity.
Sensitisation is indicated by positive skin prick test to low concentration solutions
of platinum salts.

12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
The plating solution will kill fish in most natural waters if the pH is 5 or less. The
reproduction of Daphnids is impaired (16%) by 0.014ppm Pt in 3 weeks. Do not
allow this material to enter natural watercourses.

13. DISPOSAL
The slurry obtained following neutralisation with lime or soda ash can be dried on
a filter and disposed of to land-fill, in accordance with local and national
regulations.
