5-azacytidine usage and synthesis
introduction azacitidine, with its iupac(international union of pure and applied chemistry) name 4-amino-1-beta-d-ribofuranosyl-s-triazin-2(1h)-one, also known as 5-azacytidine and azacytidine, marketed as vidaza, is a white needle crystal. it is the dna methyltransferase inhibitor which is developed by pharmion company of american. it was listed in the united states in july, 2004.
azacitidine is a specific drug that acts on the s stage of cell cycle. it can be rapidly phosphorylated and incorporate in to rna (ribonucleic acid) and dna (deoxyribonucleic acid), which leads to defective function of transfer rna, and inhibition of the production of proteins.
it can also affect the synthesis of pyrimidine by inhibiting orotidylate decarboxylase. it is mainly used for clinical treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome including refractory anemia, refractory anemia with ring sideroblasts such as the 5 hypotypes of neutrophilic granulocytopenia, thrombopenia or in need of blood transfusions, refractory anemia with increased primitive cells, refractory anemia with increased primitive cells—transformation and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia.
