Description
Silicotungstic acid hydrate is a white, crystalline powder that is highly soluble in water and polar organic solvents, but relatively insoluble in nonpolar organic solvents. It is a strong acid and noncombustible.
Uses
Used in Catalyst Preparation:
Silicotungstic acid hydrate is used as a catalyst for organic synthesis, minerals separation, and as a reagent for alkaloids. It is also used in the preparation of ethyl acetate and acetic acid from ethylene.
Used in Chemical Synthesis:
Silicotungstic acid hydrate is used as a reactant in the preparation of silicotungstate butylmethylimidazolium bromide ionic liquid hybrid material, synthesis of SnII-substituted Keggin-type polyoxometalates as photocatalysts, and preparation of silicotungstic acid/organically modified silane proton-conducting membranes.
Used in Catalyst for Catalytic Liquid-Phase Oxidation of Xylene:
Silicotungstic acid hydrate is used in catalyst preparation, which is useful for catalytic liquid-phase oxidation of xylene.
Used in Production of Hydrogen:
Silicotungstic acid hydrate acts as a mediator in the production of hydrogen through electrolysis of water.
Used in Preparation of Charge Transfer Compounds with Keggin Anions:
Silicotungstic acid hydrate is used in the preparation of charge transfer compounds with Keggin anions.
Purification Methods
Extract the acid with diethyl ether from a solution acidified with HCl. The diethyl ether is evaporated under vacuum, and the free acid is crystallised twice [Matijevic & Kerker J Phys Chem 62 1271 1958].
