Usage

Description

Rosemary oil, extracted from the flowering tops of the rosemary herb through distillation, is an essential oil known for its antiseptic, antibacterial, and fragrant properties. It is considered superior to oil obtained from distilling stems and leaves, although the latter is more common in commercial products.

Uses

Used in Cosmetics and Personal Care Industry:
Rosemary oil is used as a fragrance and flavoring agent in hair conditioners, mouth rinses, and other personal care products for its pleasant scent and ability to mask odors.
Used in Aromatherapy:
Rosemary oil is used as an essential oil with antiseptic and antibacterial properties, promoting a sense of wellbeing and relaxation.
Used in Skincare:
Rosemary oil is used as a beneficial ingredient for acne, dermatitis, and eczema due to its antiseptic and antibacterial properties. It may also stimulate fibroblast growth and increase epidermal cell turnover, making it useful in products for aging and mature skin.

Preparation

By steam distillation of the fresh flowering tops of Rosmarinus officinalis L. Uses: In public use before the 1860s. Use in fragrances in the USA amounts to about 50,000 lb/yr.

Essential oil composition

Main constituents include α-pinene, camphene, cineol, camphor and bornyl alcohol (10 to 15%). The volatile or essential oil of rosemary is also reported to include 1,8-cineole, α- and β-pinene, camphor, bornylacetate, camphene, linalool, d-limonene, borneol, myrcene, terpineol and caryophyllene.

Composition

Rosemary oleoresin contains antioxidants, which retard the oxidation of lipids (rancidity). Two of the compounds reported from oleoresin are rosmarinic acid and rosmaridiphenol.

Safety Profile

Low toxicity by ingestion and skin contact. A skin irritant. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes. See also indvidual components.
