- Chiral Ligands in Hypervalent Iodine Compounds: Synthesis and Structures of Binaphthyl-Based λ3-Iodanes
-
Several novel binaphthyl-based chiral hypervalent iodine(III) reagents have been prepared and structurally analysed. Various asymmetric oxidative reactions were applied to evaluate the reactivities and stereoselectivities of those reagents. Moderate to excellent yields were observed; however, very low stereoselectivities were obtained. NMR experiments indicated that these reagents are very easily hydrolysed in either chloroform or DMSO solvents leading to the limited stereoselectivities. It is concluded that the use of chiral ligands is an unsuccessful way to prepare efficient stereoselective iodine(III) reagents.

- Two enantiocomplementary Baeyer-Villiger monooxygenases newly identified for asymmetric oxyfunctionalization of thioether
-
Two enantiocomplementary Baeyer-Villiger monooxygenases RaBVMO and AmBVMO were identified by genome mining for the asymmetric sulfoxidation. Both recombinant BVMOs have optimal pH of 9.0 and temperature of 35 °C. The half-lives of RaBVMO and AmBVMO at 30 °C were 24.4 and 24.6 h. RaBVMO and AmBVMO exhibited broad substrate spectrum and could catalyze the oxidization of various compounds including fatty ketones, cyclic ketones, and thioethers. Kinetic parameters analysis revealed that both RaBVMO and AmBVMO displayed higher catalytic efficiency toward thioanisole than cyclohexanone. As much as 50 mM thioanisole could be completely oxidized by AmBVMO and RaBVMO with 99% (R) and 95% (S), respectively. Molecular docking analysis further provides evidence for the complementary enantioselectivity of RaBVMO and AmBVMO. Our results demonstrate the potential application of the two novel BVMOs in asymmetric synthesis of sulfoxides.

- The Stereoselective Oxidation of para-Substituted Benzenes by a Cytochrome P450 Biocatalyst
-
The serine 244 to aspartate (S244D) variant of the cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP199A4 was used to expand its substrate range beyond benzoic acids. Substrates, in which the carboxylate group of the benzoic acid moiety is replaced were oxidised with high activity by the S244D mutant (product formation rates >60 nmol.(nmol-CYP)?1.min?1) and with total turnover numbers of up to 20,000. Ethyl α-hydroxylation was more rapid than methyl oxidation, styrene epoxidation and S-oxidation. The S244D mutant catalysed the ethyl hydroxylation, epoxidation and sulfoxidation reactions with an excess of one stereoisomer (in some instances up to >98 %). The crystal structure of 4-methoxybenzoic acid-bound CYP199A4 S244D showed that the active site architecture and the substrate orientation were similar to that of the WT enzyme. Overall, this work demonstrates that CYP199A4 can catalyse the stereoselective hydroxylation, epoxidation or sulfoxidation of substituted benzene substrates under mild conditions resulting in more sustainable transformations using this heme monooxygenase enzyme.

- Polyoxometalate-Based Organic-Inorganic Hybrids as Heterogeneous Catalysts for Cycloaddition of CO2with Epoxides and Oxidative Desulfurization Reactions
-
Self-assembly of polyoxometalates, transition metal salts, and 2,6-bis(2′-pyridyl)-4-hydroxypyridine (LOH) obtained four organic-inorganic hybrids [Co2.5(LOH)(LO)2(H2O)2(PW12O39)]·3CH3CN·2OH (1), [Zn1.5(LOH)3]·(PMo12O40)·CH3OH·2H2O (2), [Cd1.5(LOH)3]·(PW12O40)·2CH3OH·1.5H2O (3), and [Mn(LOH)2]·(PW12O40)·2CH3CN·H3O (4). Hybrid 1 exhibits an extended chain, which could be further connected into a 3D supramolecular architecture by H-bonds. Hybrids 2-4 feature monomolecular structures, which are further bridged via H-bonds to yield charming 3D supramolecular structures. Noteworthy, 1 and 2 can be employed as recyclable and highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts. The activated 1 displays a high catalytic activity for the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides. Hybrid 2 exhibits an excellent catalytic performance for the oxidative desulfurization reaction.

- Synthesis of a light-harvesting ruthenium porphyrin complex substituted with BODIPY units. Implications for visible light-promoted catalytic oxidations
-
A light-harvesting ruthenium porphyrin substituted covalently with four boron-dipyrrin (BODIPY) moieties has been synthesized and studied. The resulting complex showed an efficient decarbonylation reaction predominantly due to a photo-induced energy transfer process. Chemical oxidation of the ruthenium(ii) BODIPY-porphyrin afforded a high-energytrans-dioxoruthenium(vi) species that is one order of magnitude more reactive towards alkene oxidation than those analogues supported by conventional porphyrins. In the presence of visible light, the ruthenium(ii) BODIPY-porphyrin displayed remarkable catalytic activity toward sulfide oxidation and alkene epoxidation using iodobenzene diacetate [PhI(OAc)2] and 2,6-dichloropyridineN-oxide (Cl2pyNO) as terminal oxidants, respectively. The findings in this work highlight that porphyrin-BODIPY conjugated metal complexes are potentially useful for visible light-promoted catalytic oxidations.

- Assembly of polyoxometalate-thiacalix[4]arene-based inorganic-organic hybrids as efficient catalytic oxidation desulfurization catalysts
-
Self-assembly of polyoxometalates, Ni(ii)/Ag(i) cations and tetra-[5-(mercapto)-1-methyltetrazole]-thiacalix[4]arene (L) yielded three inorganic-organic hybrids, namely, [Ni3L2(CH3OH)6(H2O)4][PMo12O40]2·3CH3OH·2H2O (1), [Ni3L2(CH3OH)6(H2O)4][PW12O40]2·3CH3OH·2H2O (2) and [Ag3L(PMo12O40)] (3). In hybrids (1) and (2), Ni(ii) cations are linked by L ligands to produce layered frameworks, and H bonds among the [PMo12O40]3?/[PW12O40]3?anions and L ligands lengthen the structures to form 3D supramolecular architectures. Hybrid (3) exhibits a 3D architecture, of which Ag(i) cations not only coordinated with the N and O atoms of L ligands and [PMo12O40]3?anions simultaneously, but also connected each other by Ag-Ag interactions. It is worth mentioning that1and3as recyclable catalysts show excellent heterogeneous catalytic activity in oxidation desulfurization reactions.

- Organocatalytic sulfoxidation
-
Treatment of a sulfide with a catalytic amount of a 1,3-diketone in the presence of silica sulfuric acid as a co-catalyst and hydrogen peroxide (50% aq) as the stoichiometric oxidant leads to the corresponding sulfoxide product. The reaction is effective for diaryl, aryl-alkyl and dialkyl sulfides and is tolerant of oxidisable and acid sensitive functional groups. Investigations have shown that the tris-peroxide 2, formed on reaction of pentane-2,4-dione with hydrogen peroxide under acidic reaction conditions, can oxidise two equivalents of sulfide using the exocyclic peroxide groups whereas the endocyclic peroxide remains intact. Calculations provide a mechanism consistent with experimental observations and suggest the reaction proceeds via an initial acid catalysed ring opening of a protonated tris-peroxide prior to oxygen transfer to a sulfur nucleophile.

- Integrating hydrogen production with anodic selective oxidation of sulfides over a CoFe layered double hydroxide electrode
-
Replacing the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with oxidation reactions for the synthesis of complex pharmaceutical molecules coupled with enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is highly attractive, but it is rarely explored. Here, we report an electrochemical protocol for selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides over a CoFe layered double hydroxide (CoFe-LDH) anode in an aqueous-MeCN electrolyte, coupled with 2-fold promoted cathodic H2productivity. This protocol displays high activity (85-96% yields), catalyst stability (10 cycles), and generality (12 examples) in selective sulfide oxidation. We demonstrate its applicability in the synthesis of four important pharmaceutical related sulfoxide compounds with scalability (up to 1.79 g). X-ray spectroscopy investigations reveal that the CoFe-LDH material evolved into amorphous CoFe-oxyhydroxide under catalytic conditions. This work may pave the way towards sustainable organic synthesis of valuable pharmaceuticals coupled with H2production.

A facile and efficient visible-light-mediated method for directly converting sulfides into sulfoxides under clean conditions without using any photocatalysts is reported. This method exhibited favourable compatibility with functional groups and afforded a series of sulfoxides with high selectivity and yields. Moreover, in order to shed more light on such a transformation, detailed mechanism studies were carried out both experimentally and theoretically. The readily accessible, low-cost and eco-friendly nature of the developed method will endow it with attractive applications in chemical synthesis.

- Modulation of photochemical oxidation of thioethers to sulfoxides or sulfones using an aromatic ketone as the photocatalyst
-
We have developed an eco-friendly and chemo-selective photocatalytic synthesis of sulfoxides or sulfones via oxidation of sulfides (thioethers) at ambient temperature using air or O2 as the oxidant. An inexpensive thioxanthone was used as the photocatalyst. Our method offers excellent chemical yields and good functional group tolerance. The hydrogen bonding between hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) and sulfoxides may play an important role in minimizing the over-oxidization of sulfoxides.

- Highly Efficient Access to (S)-Sulfoxides Utilizing a Promiscuous Flavoprotein Monooxygenase in a Whole-Cell Biocatalyst Format
-
Chiral sulfoxides have gained attention as synthons and precursors for API synthesis. Flavoproteins such as Baeyer-Villiger or styrene monooxygenases mainly provide access to (R)-sulfoxides and often suffer from low selectivity, activity, and/or limited substrate scope. The flavoprotein monooxygenase AbIMO from Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 initiates indole degradation. Here, AbIMO was expressed recombinantly in E. coli and characterized for its sulfoxidation activity and substrate spectrum. Next to indole and styrene, AbIMO was found to accept numerous alkyl aryl sulfides as substrates, transforming them to (S)-sulfoxides with high enantioselectivity (95 percent to '99 percent for most sulfides). The formulation as a whole-cell biocatalyst allowed specific production rates of up to 370 U gcdw?1 – the highest specific oxygenase activity achieved in whole cells so far – and the preparative synthesis of enantiopure (S)-aryl alkyl sulfoxides. With its extraordinarily high specific activity, high specificity, ease of handling, and high stability (catalyst is stable for '16 days at 4 °C), the designed whole-cell biocatalyst adds enormous value to the portfolio of chemical and biological catalysts for asymmetric sulfoxide synthesis.

- Accessing Enantiopure Epoxides and Sulfoxides: Related Flavin-Dependent Monooxygenases Provide Reversed Enantioselectivity
-
Enantiopure organic compounds are of major importance for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Flavin-dependent group E monooxygenases, composed of monooxygenase and reductase, are known to perform epoxidation of substituted alkenes as well as sulfoxidation in a regio- and enantioselective fashion. Group E is divided into styrene monooxygenases (SMO) and indole monooxygenases (IMO). Hitherto mainly SMOs have been characterized. In this study, we assayed 31 monooxygenases from both types, while 23 of which showed activity. They almost exclusively produced (S)-styrene oxide at high enantiomeric excess with maximum activities of 0.73 μmol min?1 mg?1 (kcat=0.54 s?1). In case of sulfoxidation, we found that the enantioselectivity is contrary between both types. IMOs preferably produce the (S)-enantiomer while SMOs have a tendency to produce the (R)-enantiomer. Sequence analysis and molecular docking of substrates allowed identifying fingerprint motives: SMO N46-V48-H50-Y73-H76-S96 and IMO S46-Q48-M50-V/I73-I76-A96. These form an essential part of the active site while the loop (AS44-51) interacts with the co-substrate and other amino acids direct the substrate. The motives clearly distinguish group E monooxygenases and define the enantioselectivity and thus direct biotechnological applications. Two-hour biotransformations with several sulfides in conjunction with upscale experiments (10 and 100 mg scale) resulted in the identification of promising candidates for the realization of biocatalytic processes.

- Selectivity switch in the aerobic oxygenation of sulfides photocatalysed by visible-light-responsive decavanadate
-
Nanometre-sized metal oxides are promising species for the development of visible-light-responsive photocatalysts for the selective transformation of organic functional groups. In this article, we report that decavanadate ([V10O28]6-, V10) behaved as an efficient visible-light-responsive photocatalyst in the product-selective oxygenation of sulfides achieved using O2 (1 atm) as the green oxidant. In particular, we revealed that visible-light-responsive photocatalysis of V10 showed remarkable activity for the oxygenation of structurally diverse sulfides to form the corresponding sulfones using O2 in methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). Furthermore, by simply adding water to the reaction mixture, the product selectivity of sulfide oxygenation can be significantly switched toward the production of sulfoxides, without concomitant loss of photocatalytic activity. Based on experimental evidence, we inferred the following mechanistic steps for this photocatalytic system: the aerobic oxygenation of sulfides to form the corresponding sulfoxides initiated by a visible-light-induced photoredox reaction of V10. As for the formation of sulfones, MEK-derived peroxide species as the co-catalysts are probably involved in the oxygenation of sulfoxides to sulfones. The selectivity switch of the V10-photocatalysed reaction brought about by water addition is most likely achieved by suppressing the formation of MEK-derived peroxide species. This journal is

- Formation and kinetic studies of manganese(IV)-oxo porphyrins: Oxygen atom transfer mechanism of sulfide oxidations
-
Visible light irradiation of photo-labile porphyrin-manganese(III) chlorates or bromates (2) produced manganese(IV)-oxo porphyrins [MnIV(Por)(O)] (Por = porphyrin) (3) in three porphyrin ligands. The same oxo species 3 were also formed by chemical oxidation of the corresponding manganese(III) precursors (1) with iodobenzene diacetate, i.e. PhI(OAc)2. The systems under study include 5,10,15,20-tetra(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin?manganese(IV)-oxo (3a), 5,10,15,20-tetra(2,6-difluorophenyl)porphyrin?manganese(IV)-oxo (3b), and 5,10,15,20-tetramesitylporphyrin?manganese(IV)-oxo (3c). As expected, complexes 3 reacted with thioanisoles to produce the corresponding sulfoxides and over-oxidized sulfones. The kinetics of oxygen atom transfer (OAT) reactions of these generated 3 with aryl sulfides were studied in CH3CN solutions. Second-order rate constants for sulfide oxidation reactions are comparable to those of alkene epoxidations and activated C[sbnd]H bond oxidations by the same oxo species 3. For a given substrate, the reactivity order for the manganese(IV)-oxo species was 3a > 3b > 3c, consistent with expectations on the basis of the electron-withdrawing capacity of the porphyrin macrocycles. Free-energy Hammett analyses gave near-linear correlations with σ values, indicating no significant positive charge developed at the sulfur during the oxidation process. The mechanistic results strongly suggest [MnIV(Por)(O)] reacts as a direct OAT agent towards sulfide substrates through a manganese(II) intermediate that was detected in this work. However, an alternative pathway that involves a disproportionation of 3 to form a higher oxidized manganese(V)-oxo species may be significant when less reactive substrates are present. The competition product studies with the Hammett correlation plot confirmed that the observed manganese(IV)-oxo species is not the true oxidant for the sulfide oxidations catalyzed by manganese(III) porphyrins with PhI(OAc)2.

- Iridium complex-linked porous organic polymers for recyclable, broad-scope photocatalysis of organic transformations
-
Two rigid porous organic polymers (Ir-POP-1 and Ir-POP-2) were prepared from the coupling reactions of tetraphenylmethane tetraborate and two [Ir(ppy)2(dtbbpy)]+-based bitopic linkers and applied as heterogeneous visible-light photocatalysts for organic transformations. Ir-POP-2 was found to exhibit high catalytic activity for a wide range of organic reactions, which include Smiles-Truce rearrangement of alkyliodides, desulfurative conjugate addition to Michael acceptors, and aerobic oxidations of sulfides and arylboronic acids. For all the transformations, Ir-POP-2 could achieve heterogeneous photocatalytic efficiency that rivals that of the homogeneous prototype iridium complexes. This remarkably high photocatalytic performance has been attributed to the large pore size of the conjugated backbone. The new heterogeneous photocatalyst was also highly stable to achieve good recyclability for all the studied reactions and could be reused eight to nineteen times.

- Visible light generation of chromium(V)-oxo salen complexes and mechanistic insights into catalytic sulfide oxidation
-
Visible light irradiation of the photo-labile salen-chromium(III) chlorate or bromate precursors produced salen-chromium(V)-oxo complexes that were spectroscopically and kinetically indistinguishable from those formed by chemical oxidation of chromium(III) salens with PhI(OAc)2. The photochemistry observed in this work is ascribed to the heterolytic cleavage of the O-X bond in the apical counterion that results in a two-electron oxidation of the metal to form the chromium(V)-oxo species. Second-order rate constants for oxidation reactions of 3 with organic substrates were determined under pseudo-first order condition, and particularly low level of reactivity for sulfide oxidations was observed. In this study, chromium(III) salen complexes effectively catalyzed the oxidation of aryl sulfides into sulfoxides with PhI(OAc)2 in the presence of a small amount of water. The competition product studies with the Hammett correlation plot indicated that the observed chromium(V)-oxo species is not likely to serve as the major oxidant for the sulfide oxidations catalyzed by chromium(III) salens with PhI(OAc)2.

- Accurate Regulating of Visible-Light Absorption in Polyoxotitanate-Calix[8]arene Systems by Ligand Modification
-
With use of a macrocyclic polyphenol, tert-butylcalix[8]arene (TBC[8]), as ligands, a series of TBC[8]-stabilized {Ti4O2}clusters, containing penta- and hexacoordinated Ti centers, were synthesized. Such complexes are "core-shell" shaped containing a {Ti4O2} core arranged in a zigzag fashion. While outer walls of the clusters are decorated by deprotonated TBC[8], their upper and lower surfaces can be modified by various O- or N-donor ligands, and the ratio of the penta- and hexacoordinated Ti(IV) centers in the {Ti4O2} core can be precisely regulated from 4:0, to 3:1, to 2:2, to 1:3, and finally to 0:4. The combined coordination of different ligands in the axial direction shows significant influence on the adsorption of the TBC[8]-Ti4 system in the visible-light region, and their absorption edge can be precisely regulated from 600 to 700 nm. The above structural functionalization in the TBC[8]-Ti4 system also tunes their photocatalytic H2 production activities and oxidative desulfurization ability. Thus, for the first time, by confining the polyoxotitanium cluster in macrocyclic molecules, we provide an example of understanding the structure-property relationship of titanium-oxygen materials by ligand modification.

- Synthesis and characterization of VO–vanillin complex immobilized on MCM-41 and its facile catalytic application in the sulfoxidation reaction, and synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones and disulfides in green media
-
In this work, a vanillin complex is immobilized onto MCM-41 and characterized by FT-IR, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and BET techniques. This supported Schiff base complex was found to be an efficient and recoverable catalyst for the chemoselective oxidation of sulfides into sulfoxides and thiols into their corresponding disulfides (using hydrogen peroxide as a green oxidant) and also a suitable catalyst for the preparation of 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one derivatives in water at 90°C. Using this protocol, we show that a variety of disulfides, sulfoxides, and 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one derivatives can be synthesized in green conditions. The catalyst can be recovered and recycled for further reactions without appreciable loss of catalytic performance.

We report the syntheses and structures of two new copper(ii)-containing tungstotellurates(vi) Na12[TeVI2W8O38Cu2(H2O)2]·7H2O (Te2W8Cu2) and Na6[TeVIW6O24Cu(NH2CH2CO2)2]·6H2O (TeW6Cu). The two compounds were synthesized by a simple one-pot method and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), powder XRD, FT-IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis in the solid state. Furthermore, their catalytic properties for the selective oxidation of thioethers were also studied systematically. The catalytic experiment results indicate that the tungstotellurate(vi) Te2W8Cu2 is an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the selective oxidation of thioethers to sulfoxides or sulfones by an H2O2 oxidant at room temperature. Under the ambient conditions, Te2W8Cu2 can convert 99percent of methyl(phenyl)sulfane to sulfoxides or sulfones with 96percent or 99percent selectivity, respectively, and the utilization rate of H2O2 is up to 80percent. Furthermore, Te2W8Cu2 as a heterogeneous catalyst is stable in the reaction and could be reused at least five cycles with conserved activity.

- Synthesis of an anthraquinone-containing polymeric photosensitizer and its application in aerobic photooxidation of thioethers
-
Work on the synthesis of a polymeric photosensitizer and its application in the photooxidation of thioethers is reported herein. Firstly, the polymeric photosensitizer was designed and synthesized by the reaction of anthraquinone-2-carbonyl chloride (AQ-2-COCl) with poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA). Then, the visible light-induced photooxidation of thioethers under aerobic conditions was investigated. The results revealed that the reaction yielded sulfoxides highly chemoselectively in excellent yields with good substrate tolerance. Importantly, AQ-PHEMA could be easily recovered and reused more than 20 times without significant loss of the catalytic activity.

- Switchable Synthesis of Aryl Sulfones and Sulfoxides through Solvent-Promoted Oxidation of Sulfides with O2/Air
-
A practical and switchable method for the synthesis of aryl sulfones and sulfoxides via sulfide oxidation was developed. The chemoselectivities of products were simply controlled by reaction temperature using O2/air as the terminal oxidant and oxygen source. The broad substrate scope, easy realization of gram-scale production, and the simplification of a sulfide oxidation system render the strategy attractive and valuable.

- Ionic Liquid Stabilized Niobium Oxoclusters Catalyzing Oxidation of Sulfides with Exceptional Activity
-
We present here a new class of niobium oxoclusters that are stabilized effectively by carboxylate ionic liquids. These functionalized ILs are designated as [TBA][LA], [TBA][PA], and [TBA][HPA] in this work, in which TBA represents tetrabutylammonium and LA, PA, and HPA refer to lactate, propionate, 3-hydroxypropionate anions, respectively. The as-synthesized Nb oxoclusters have been characterized by use of elemental analysis, NMR, IR, XRD, TGA, HRTEM. It was found that [TBA][LA]-stabilized Nb oxoclusters (Nb?OC@[TBA][LA]) are uniformly dispersed with an average particle size of 2–3 nm and afforded exceptionally high catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of various thioethers. The turnover number with Nb?OC@[TBA][LA] catalyst was over 56 000 at catalyst loading as low as 0.0033 mol % (1 ppm). Meantime, the catalyst also showed the high activity for the epoxidation of olefins and allylic alcohols by using only 0.065 mol % of catalyst (50 ppm). The characterization of 93Nb NMR spectra revealed that the Nb oxoclusters underwent structural transformation in the presence of H2O2 but regenerated to their initial state at the end of the reaction. In particular, the highly dispersed Nb oxoclusters can absorb a large amount of polar organic solvents and thus were swollen greatly, which exhibited “pseudo” liquid phase behavior, and enabled the substrate molecules to be highly accessible to the catalytic center of Nb oxocluster units.

- Selective catalytic oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides or sulfones over amorphous Nb2O5/AC catalysts in aqueous phase at room temperature
-
Selective oxidation of sulfides into sulfoxides or sulfones is an important transformation in organic synthesis. Activated carbon supported Nb-based catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method and then characterized by the XRD, TEM and XPS. The characterization results indicate Nb species is amorphous Nb2O5. The catalysts were applied for the catalytic oxidation of sulfides in aqueous phase with H2O2 as the oxidant. Sulfides could be converted into the corresponding sulfoxides or sulfones with high conversion and selectivity at room temperature. The recycling experiments showed the Nb2O5/AC catalysts exhibited good reusability. They could be recycled for 10 times without obvious loss of activity and selectivity.

- Highly stable polyoxometalate-resorcin[4]arene-based inorganic-organic complexes for catalytic oxidation desulfurization
-
Self-assembly of a resorcin[4]arene-based ligand (TMR4A) with metal salts and H3PMo12O40·xH2O offers two isostructural complexes, namely, [Ni2Cl(TMR4A)2(CH3CN)2]·[PMo12O40]·4CH3CN (1) and [Co2Cl(TMR4A)2(CH3CN)2]·[PMo12O40]·4CH3CN (2). In both 1 and 2, one Cl? anion bridges two metal cations, and each metal cation is further chelated by four 2-mercaptopyridine N-oxide groups of one TMR4A, producing a [M2Cl(TMR4A)2]3+ dimer (M?=?Ni or Co). The negative [PMo12O40]3? as a counter-anion balances the positive charge. Markedly, 1 and 2 exhibit high stability in aqueous solutions with different pH values and in organic solvents. Remarkably, the efficient heterogeneous catalytic capability for oxidative desulfurization was studied by suing 1 and 2 as recycled catalysts. Moreover, the electrochemical behaviors of the two compounds were discussed as well.

- Polyoxometalate-Bridged Cu(I)- And Ag(I)-Thiacalix[4]arene Dimers for Heterogeneous Catalytic Oxidative Desulfurization and Azide-Alkyne "click" Reaction
-
Two remarkable polyoxometalate-bridged Cu(I)- and Ag(I)-thiacalix[4]arene dimers, namely, [Cu4(SiW12O40)(L)2(DMF)2]·2EtOH·DMF (1-Cu) and [Ag4(PMo12O40)(L)2]·OH (1-Ag), were prepared by using a new thiacalix[4]arene, metal cation and polyoxometalate (L = tetra[2-(ethylthio)-1-methyl-1H-imidazole]-thiacalix[4]arene). In 1-Cu and 1-Ag, two thiacalix[4]arenes were linked together by one [SiW12O40]4- or [PMo12O40]3- anion via two metal cations to give a molecular dimer. Further, adjacent dimers were extended into a high-dimensional supramolecular architecture through hydrogen bonds. Markedly, these molecular dimers are exceedingly stable in organic solvents and then were employed as efficient catalysts for catalytic oxidation desulfurization as well as the azide-alkyne "click" reaction.

- Discovery of a New Family of Polyoxometalate-Based Hybrids with Improved Catalytic Performances for Selective Sulfoxidation: The Synergy between Classic Heptamolybdate Anions and Complex Cations
-
A series of functional cation-regulated isopolymolybdate-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds, Na2H2[Mo4O12(C8H17O5N)2]·10H2O (1), Na2[M(Bis-tris)(H2O)]2[Mo7O24]·10H2O [M = Cu, 2; Ni, 3; Co, 4; Zn, 5; Bis-tris = 2,2-Bis(hydroxymethyl)-2,2′,2″-nitrilotriethanol], and (NH4)2[M(Bis-tris)(H2O)]2[Mo7O24]·6H2O (M = Zn, 6; Cu, 7), were synthesized and characterized toward advanced molecular catalyst design. Compound 1 is a covalently bonded adduct, and its self-assembly process can be probed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Compounds 2-7 are polyoxometalate (POM)-based hybrids containing classic heptamolybdate anions and complex cations with Bis-tris ligands. All of these compounds showed remarkable catalytic effects for selective sulfide oxidation. To the best of our knowledge, compound 5 presents the best catalytic activity so far among the reported hybrid materials with common easily synthesized small-molecule POM clusters and also exhibits outstanding reliability. The conclusion of the catalytic effect is drawn from the results that Zn-based compounds have better catalytic effects than other transition-metal-containing compounds and the compound constructed by Na+ has higher catalytic activity than that constructed by NH4 +. The mechanism studies show that the improvements of the catalytic performance are caused by the synergy between classic heptamolybdate anions and complex cations. ESI-MS data and UV-vis spectra revealed that the POM anions can form intermediate peroxomolybdenum units during catalytic reaction. Further, the combination of the substrate thioanisole with complex cations was characterized by NMR experiments and UV-vis spectra. Thus, a new synergistic mechanism of anions and cations is proposed in which the activated thioanisole is used as a nucleophile to attack the peroxomolybdenum bonds, and this provides a new strategy in the design of reliable POM-based catalysts.

- Kinetic and mechanistic aspects of solid state, nanostructured porphyrin diacid photosensitizers in photooxidation of sulfides
-
In continuation of our studies on the photocatalytic performance of porphyrin diacids, the kinetics and mechanisms of the photooxidation of para-substituted phenyl methyl sulfides (para X = H, CH3, OCH3, Cl, and F) catalyzed by a series of meso-tetra(aryl)porphyrins (aryl = phenyl, 2-chlorophenyl, 2-methylphenyl, 4-chlorophenyl, 4-methylphenyl and 4-methoxyphenyl) immobilized on Amberlyst 15 nanostructures (nanoAmb), H2T(2 or 4-X)PP@nanoAmb, are reported. The immobilization of porphyrins on the polymer was confirmed by diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectroscopy and EDX analysis. While little or no catalyst degradation was observed for a reaction time of ca. 3 h, the electron-deficient porphyrins (pseudo-first-order rate constants, kobs = 0.0049-0.012 min-1) showed faster second-order kinetics than the electron-rich ones (kobs = 2.30 × 10-5-9.92 × 10-4 min-1). The order of photocatalytic activity of the porphyrins approximately correlates with the singlet oxygen quantum yield (φΔ) of the photosensitizers. Diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectra of the immobilized porphyrins demonstrated a large red shift of the Soret and Q bands of the porphyrins which was more dominant in the case of H2T(4-OMe)PP. The weak overlap between the emission spectrum of the light source and the absorption spectrum of the latter was used to explain the low photocatalytic activity of H2T(4-OMe)PP@nanoAmb. The observation of a slope (ρ) of -2.80 for the oxidation of methyl phenyl sulfide and para-substituted phenyl methyl sulfides is in accord with the involvement of an electrophilic oxidation mechanism mediated by singlet oxygen species. H2TPP@naoAmb was recovered and reused at least five times without significant loss of the catalytic activity and detectable catalyst degradation, giving a turnover number of 5 × 5000 for five successive reactions. The catalyst was successfully used for large-scale (up to 6.6 mmol of sulfide per batch, in a 1:10000 catalyst-to-sulfide molar ratio) photooxidation of a wide range of sulfides to the corresponding sulfoxide in a water/acetonitrile solvent mixture.

- Continuous-Flow Electrochemical Generator of Hypervalent Iodine Reagents: Synthetic Applications
-
An efficient and reliable electrochemical generator of hypervalent iodine reagents has been developed. In the anodic oxidation of iodoarenes to hypervalent iodine reagents under flow conditions, the use of electricity replaces hazardous and costly chemical oxidants. Unstable hypervalent iodine reagents can be prepared easily and coupled with different substrates to achieve oxidative transformations in high yields. The unstable, electrochemically generated reagents can also easily be transformed into classic bench-stable hypervalent iodine reagents through ligand exchange. The combination of electrochemical and flow-chemistry advantages largely improves the ecological footprint of the overall process compared to conventional approaches.

- Water-soluble polymer anchored peroxotitanates as environmentally clean and recyclable catalysts for mild and selective oxidation of sulfides with H2O2 in water
-
Anchoring of peroxotitanium (pTi) species to linear water-soluble acrylic acid based polymers, poly(sodium acrylate) (PA) and poly(sodium methacrylate) (PMA) led to the successful synthesis of a pair of new, water-tolerant and recyclable catalysts of the type [Ti2(O2)2O2(OH)2]4-—L (L = PA or PMA), highly effective in chemoselective sulfoxidation of organic sulfides with 30% H2O2 in aqueous medium at ambient temperature. The catalytic protocol is high yielding (TOF up to 11,280 h?1), operationally simple as well as environmentally clean and safe, being free from halide, or any other toxic auxiliaries. The catalysts are sufficiently stable to afford easy recyclability for at least 10 consecutive reaction cycles of sulfoxidation with consistent activity selectivity profile. Oxidation of dibenzothiophene (DBT) to respective high purity sulfoxide or sulfone could also be accomplished using the same catalysts by variation of reaction conditions.

- Polymer-supported eosin Y as a reusable photocatalyst for visible light mediated organic transformations
-
A novel polymer-supported recyclable photocatalyst has been developed for visible light mediated oxidation reactions. The organic dye eosin Y was loaded on macroporous commercially available Amberlite IRA 900 chloride resin and exploited as a photocatalyst for visible light mediated oxidation of thioethers to sulfoxides and phenylboronic acids to phenols under open atmospheric air. Varieties of functional groups were well tolerated during oxidation. The catalyst is recyclable for six cycles without significant loss in its efficiency. Furthermore, gram-scale oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides has been demonstrated to prove the commercial viability of the method.

- Cercosporin-bioinspired selective photooxidation reactions under mild conditions
-
The development of an efficient system for selective oxidation of organic compounds to generate more valuable compounds with molecular oxygen is a significant challenge in industrial chemistry. Bioinspired by the ability of naturally occurring perylenequinonoid pigments (PQPs) to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon photoirradiation, here we report that cercosporin, one of the perylenequinonoid pigments, can function as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly photocatalyst for a wide range of selective oxidations, including benzylic C-H bonds to carbonyls, amines to aldehydes, and sulfides to sulfoxides. All of the representative reactions proceeded smoothly with high efficiency under mild conditions. Owing to the use of inexpensive metal-free visible light-driven photocatalyst produced from microbial fermentation with cheap glucose as the starting material and the ease of handling, we expect that this developed method will be particularly attractive for many more applications in synthetic transformation.

- Asymmetric Sulfinylations of N-Methylephedrine-Modified Tri- or Tetraalkyl Zincates by Symmetric Diaryl Sulfoxides
-
Diethylzinc was treated with 1 or 2 equiv. of AlkMgCl or PhMgBr (preferably) or with 1 equiv. of nBuLi (less efficiently) for forming species – plausibly zincates – which were sulfinylated by diaryl sulfoxides to give racemic alkyl aryl sulfoxides in yields reaching 100 %. Dialkylzinc reagents were also activated by treatments with 1 or 2 equiv. of an enantiomerically pure alkylmagnesium β-aminoalkoxide. This worked best when the alkoxide stemmed from a dialkylmagnesium reagent and an equimolar amount of N-methyl-(–)-ephedrine. This second activation mode allowed sulfinylations of what was originally the dialkylzinc reagent with diaryl sulfoxides. This generated alkyl aryl sulfoxides with enantiomeric ratios up to 93:7 in up to 100 % yield.

- Altering 2-Hydroxybiphenyl 3-Monooxygenase Regioselectivity by Protein Engineering for the Production of a New Antioxidant
-
2-Hydroxybiphenyl 3-monooxygenase is a flavin-containing NADH-dependent aromatic hydroxylase that oxidizes a broad range of 2-substituted phenols. In order to modulate its activity and selectivity, several residues in the active site pocket were investigated by saturation mutagenesis. Variant M321A demonstrated altered regioselectivity by oxidizing 3-hydroxybiphenyl for the first time, thus enabling the production of a new antioxidant, 3,4-dihydroxybiphenyl, with similar ferric reducing capacity to the well-studied piceatannol. The crystal structure of M321A was determined (2.78 ?), and molecular docking of the 3-substituted phenol provided a rational explanation for the altered regioselectivity. Furthermore, HbpA was found to possess pro-S enantioselectivity towards the production of several chiral sulfoxides, whereas variant M321F exhibited improved enantioselectivity. Based on the biochemical characterization of several mutants, it was suggested that Trp97 stabilized the substrate in the active site, Met223 was involved in NADH entrance or binding to the active site, and Pro320 might facilitate FAD movement.

Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s) catalyzed asymmetric sulfoxidation represents a green route for the synthesis of valuable enantiopure sulfoxides, which are potentially interesting synthons in synthetic and pharmaceutical chemistry. Here the potential P450 and redox partner genes from Parvibaculum lavamentivorans DS-1 are screened and co-expressed in Escherichia coli host to construct twenty recombinant P450 strains. By testing the whole-cell biooxidation of thioanisole, P450PL2 (CYP278A4) and P450PL7 (CYP108G3) are identified with excellent S enantioselectivity while P450PL1 (CYP111B1) and P450PL9 (CYP153A26) exhibit the complementary R enantioselectivity. Asymmetric sulfoxidation of sulfides 1 a–1 m is further investigated using the recombinant E. coli strain P450PL2-2 based on the optimal conditions, producing the corresponding enantioenriched sulfoxides with up to 82 % isolated yield and 99 % ee.

- Insights from kinetic studies of photo-generated compound II models: Reactivity toward aryl sulfides
-
Iron(IV)-oxo porphyrins [FeIV(Por)O] (Por = poprhyrin), commonly called compound II models, were produced in three electron-deficient ligands by visible light irradiation of highly photo-labile porphyrin-iron(III) bromates or chlorates. The kinetics of oxygen transfer atom (OAT) reactions with aryl sulfides by these photo-generated [FeIV(Por)O] (3) were studied in CH3CN solutions. The iron(IV)-oxo porphyrins under study include 5,10,15,20-tetra(2,6-dichlorophenyl)porphyrin-iron(IV)-oxo (3a), 5,10,15,20-tetra(2,6-difluorophenyl)porphyrin-iron(IV)-oxo (3b), and 5,10,15,20-tetra(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin-iron(IV)-oxo (3c). As expected, complexes 3 were competent oxidants and reacted rapidly with thioanisoles to give the corresponding sulfoxides with minor over-oxidation sulfones. Apparent second-order rate constants determined under pseudo-first-order conditions for sulfide oxidation reactions are (9.8 ± 0.1) × 102–(3.7 ± 0.3) × 101 M?1 s?1, which are 3 to 4 orders of magnitude greater in comparison to those of alkene epoxidations and activated C–H bond oxidations by the same oxo species. Conventional Hammett analyses gave non-linear correlations, indicating no significant charge developed at the sulfur during the oxidation process. For a given substrate, the reactivity order for the iron(IV)-oxo species was 3c 3b 3a, which is inverted from expectations on the basis of the electron-withdrawing capacity of the porphyrin macrocycles. The absolute rate constants from kinetic studies provided insights into the transient oxidants in catalytic reactions under turnover conditions where actual reactive intermediates are not observable. Our kinetic and catalytic competition results strongly suggest that 3 may undergo a disproportionation reaction to form a higher oxidized iron(IV)-oxo porphyrin radical cations as the true oxidant.

- Carbazole-triazine based donor-acceptor porous organic frameworks for efficient visible-light photocatalytic aerobic oxidation reactions
-
We report the synthesis of a series of carbazole-triazine based donor-acceptor (D-A) POFs and their photocatalytic activities for aerobic oxidation reactions. The simultaneous introduction of a carbazole-based electron donor and a triazine-based electron acceptor in D-A POFs stabilizes the charge transfer state and enables an efficient triplet-triplet energy transfer to generate 1O2. Meanwhile, systematic variation of the D-A distance results in the tunable photoredox properties and consequently the efficiency for generation of reactive oxygen species (ROSs). Upon visible light excitation, all three D-A POFs exhibit excellent capability to promote three aerobic oxidations: sulfide oxidation, oxidative amine coupling, and Mannich reactions. This systematic study validates the design principle of D-A POFs as high-performance photo-oxidation catalysts with wide substrate scope and excellent stability and recyclability.
