To determine whether the arylation of ortho-C−H bonds is
directed by the imino group, we treated the ortho-phenyl-
bearing benzylic aldimine with PhMgBr under oxidative
conditions. As shown in eq 3, phenylation of the ortho-C−H

bond proceeded smoothly, affording the compound 3a in 95%
yield. We proved that the stepwise arylation/alkenylation and
arylation/alkylation reactions cannot occur when arylmagne-
sium is replaced with an alkenyl or alkyl Grignard reagent in the
second step (eqs 4 and 5). By the late-stage functionalization,
the diarylated benzaldehyde can be used in the preparation of an
interesting material fluorenone derivative (eq 6).

In summary, we have developed a sequential difunctionaliza-
tion of unactivated C−O and C−H bonds in a one-pot
operation by making use of cost-effective chromium catalysis.
This reaction was promoted by an inexpensive chromium(II)
salt with an N-benzyl or isopropyl-substituted imino auxiliary,
allowing for the sequential incorporation of two identical or
different aromatic scaffolds into the benzaldehyde derivatives. It
offers a rare example of the sequential cleavage of unactivated
C−O and C−H bonds for the formation of two aromatic C−C
bonds in a simple one-pot operation.
