In summary, an asymmetric electrosynthesis has been developed
by combining anodic oxidation and proline-catalysis to realize highly
enantioselective and direct synthesis of C2-quaternary indolin-3-ones
from 2-arylindoles. This protocol avoids the use of oxidizing agents
and metals and has the advantages of possessing mild reaction
conditions, wide substrate range, and good functional group
tolerance. We envision that this work on electricity-driven
asymmetric organocatalysis will spur further investigations in
merging asymmetric catalysis of amino acids or their deriva-
tives with novel electrochemical activation modes.
