Choose the Phosphonate Reagent

To synthesize the E isomer, you should use a Horner-Wittig reagent with a strong electron-withdrawing group (e.g., a carboxyl group) on the phosphorus atom. This is called a "Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons" (HWE) reagent. The reaction of the HWE reagent with the aldehyde or ketone typically results in the E-alkene.
