General Description
17-hydroxy-6-methylene-19-norpregn-4-ene-3,20-dione 17-acetate is a synthetic progestin and steroid hormone derivative. It is a progestin medication used in hormonal contraception and in the treatment of gynecological disorders. Its chemical structure is similar to the hormone progesterone, and it works by binding to and activating progesterone receptors in the body. This results in the suppression of ovulation and changes in the cervical mucus and endometrial lining, making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg and for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus. 17-hydroxy-6-methylene-19-norpregn-4-ene-3,20-dione 17-acetate is often combined with estrogen in oral contraceptives to provide effective birth control.

Oral contraceptives (OCs) are synthetic steroids, or progestins, which are structurally related to testosterone or to progesterone. Many progestins have been synthesized and approved for OCs, hormonal replacement therapy (HRT), or the treatment of some gynecological disorders. Nomegestrol acetate (NOMAc) is a newly approved OC and has gained rapid acceptance in many countries for OC or HRT. The synthesis of NOMAc remains challenging and costly. We have developed a novel and improved procedure for the synthesis of NOMAc with a total of 11 steps and an overall good yield without the use of hazardous reagents.
