Six complexes of the general formula (Me3MCH2SeR)2M′O2 (M = Si, Ge; R = Me, Ph; M′ = Pd, Pt) have been prepared. Spectroscopic results suggest that the complexes have trans geometry, which is confirmed by the single-crystal X-ray structure determination of two of them. The crystals of (Me3SiCH2SeMe)2PdCl2 (1) are orthorhombic, Pbca, with a = 6.492 (4) ?, b = 11.438 (7) ?, c = 27.247 (15) ?, Z = 4, and R = 0.0249. The crystals of (Me3GeCH2SeMe)2PtCl2 (2) are also orthorhombic, Pbca, with a = 6.451 (1) ?, b = 11.543 (2) ?, c = 27.457 (5) ?, Z = 4, and R = 0.0431. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural, and the configuration around selenium is pyramidal while around palladium or platinum it is square-planar. In solution, the molecules display pyramidal inversion at selenium.
